Your eyes aren’t deceiving you. This waterline look has resurfaced to the spotlight and is here to stay. Circa early 2000’s, heavy punk-inspired makeup was all the rage and worn by the likes of entertainment icons like Taylor Momsen and Avril Lavigne. But gradually, modern day makeup moved away from messy, kohl eyeliner and more towards clean lines and sharp winged liner. But applying eyeliner with a heavy hand is back on everyone’s radar. Much like the rockstar inspired makeup trend, this makeup look is edgy, yet undeniably alluring. Here’s our tips for bringing back bottom waterline eyeliner into your routine.

Although this area is more delicate, lining the waterline is not as intimidating as it seems. If you are rather new to this beauty trend, there’s no better way to start out than with a smokey eye. After all, a darker makeup look is going to blend seamlessly well with your eyeliner. We recommend prepping with an eyeshadow primer before going in with color. Anything from metallic gray to matte black is a must for smoldering eyes. Of course, you can create dimension by going in with a gray all over your lid and emphasizing the outer corner and crease with a darker eyeshadow.

Now, it’s time for the main attraction. Avoid using liquid eyeliner for this tightlining technique. Instead, a smudgy, soft pencil is going to be the key to nailing this trend. We recommend Urban Decay 24-7 Glide-On Eyeliner which is waterproof. Before starting, lightly dab this area with a cotton swab to whisk away a little moisture. Doing so will ensure your eyeliner stays put for as long as possible. From there, simply pull down your lower lid as gently as possible and take your eyeliner pencil of choice into your waterline.

Believe it or not, but that’s all there is to it. If you want to try out the bottom waterline eyeliner trend but for a softer, daytime look, try swapping black for white. Doing so will actually brighten your eyes for a youthful look.
